Megumi Eto (江藤 惠, Etō Megumi) is a minor character in Battle Royale.
Backstory[]
Megumi showed a strong interest in photography, as shown by the multiple photos she takes in the film. Megumi was a playful girl but also seemed to be overly trusting. If Megumi was anything like her novel and manga counterparts, she may have had an older sister who was plagued by false rumors.
Friends and Enemies[]
Megumi was best friends with Noriko Nakagawa and friends with Shuya Nanahara and Yoshitoki Kuninobu. She had a crush on Shinji Mimura. She didn't get along with Mitsuko Souma's clique, but claimed she always found Mitsuko herself okay. She may have been friends with Mizuho Inada and Kaori Minami.
Before the Program[]
Before Kitano resigned, Class B decided to take a day off and skip school, Megumi included; she attended the basketball game against Class A and celebrated when Class B won. Megumi decided to go on the class trip; when on the bus, she sat with Noriko until she convinced her to share the cookies she made with Shuya and Yoshitoki. Megumi took a picture of the three before telling Shuya that Noriko's been waiting all day to give him her cookies, flustering her. Megumi then gave the developed photo to Yoshitoki, who got indignant that she cut off most of him, causing her to laugh. Megumi fell asleep after breathing in a sleeping gas that was pumped into the bus; she was then transported to an island and fitted with an explosive collar.
Megumi, along with the rest of the class, woke up in a classroom in the island's school. Unnerved by the presence of Shogo Kawada and Kazuo Kiriyama, Megumi rushed to the windows and watched a helicopter land in front of the school. Megumi was shocked to see that Kitano had returned. When Kitano asked the class if they knew the BR Act law, Megumi kept silent, obviously knowing the law but afraid to say it aloud. Megumi was horrified to see Masao Hayashida's corpse. When Fumiyo Fujiyoshi was killed, Megumi panicked and ran towards the door trying to escape before running towards the back of the classroom when the soldiers began firing; when Noriko got shot, she rushed to her side to check on her. When Yoshitoki's collar got activated, Megumi ran around the room trying to evade him.
When Megumi's name was called, she gave Noriko a goodbye hug before grabbing her school bag and running towards the front of the room, catching her supply bag and running out of the school.
During the Program[]
Megumi found refuge in a shack; she sat under a table and strung up her flashlight to look at photos of Shinji longingly, when she heard something fall over. Megumi instantly turns off the light and pulls out her stun gun, demanding to know who it is. The person is revealed to be Mitsuko, who identifies herself by shining her flashlight up at her own face and grinning menacingly; she asked Megumi if she could come in, to which she said yes and that while their groups never got along, she always considered Mitsuko alright.

Mitsuko then sat down next to Megumi and teased her about her photos of Shinji. Then, she questions Megumi about her weapon, to which Megumi says it's pretty useless; Mitsuko responds by saying that if you zap someone with a bad heart, you could kill them. Megumi asked Mitsuko if she had experience with a stun gun, to which the latter stared at the former with a blank expression before the two laughed her question off. Megumi then attempted to take her stun gun back, and Mitsuko jerked her hand away before lunging at her. Megumi attempted to run away, but Mitsuko tackled her and held a sickle to her throat; Mitsuko said that the sickle's her weapon and that she considered it pretty mediocre but now thinks it's not so bad. Mitsuko then tells Megumi that she found Yoji Kuramoto and Yoshimi Yahagi hanging next door, before saying she refuses to die like that and ripping Megumi's throat open, instantly killing her.
Etymology[]
- The name Megumi means "blessing, grace, favor, kindness" (惠).
- Megumi's surname Eto means "bay, inlet" (江) (e) and "wisteria" (藤) (tō).
Notes & Trivia[]
- This version of Megumi is the only version that doesn't doubt Mitsuko from the start.
- This version of Megumi is the only version who is friends with Noriko. In the novel and manga, Megumi is friends with Kaori and Mizuho, while Noriko is friends with the neutral girls.
- In the film Megumi has a crush on Shinji, but in the novel she has a crush on Shuya while her crush in the manga is never mentioned.
