Backstory[]
Izumi Kanai (金井 泉, Kanai Izumi) is a prep but not stuck up at all. She came from one of the five richest families in town as her father is a town officer. She was once selected to run in a relay race at school, but she dropped the baton and burst into tears. Izumi was kind and caring despite her wealthy background.
Appearance[]
Izumi was a petite girl. She was thought to be cute by Mitsuru Numai and Yutaka Seto, who had a crush on her.
Friends and Enemies[]
Izumi was friends with Yukie Utsumi, Haruka Tanizawa, Chisato Matsui, Satomi Noda and Noriko Nakagawa, or "The Neutrals". Yutaka Seto had a crush on her, and Mitsuru implies he may have, saying that he found her "kind of cute". Yutaka explained to Shinji Mimura that no matter what Izumi was doing, she always looked pretty.
In the Program[]
After Izumi leaves the school she travels to the southern tip of the island and lingers there for a few minutes. However, she is soon met by Kazuo Kiriyama, who had arranged for himself and his gang to meet at this location. Spotting him, Izumi attempts to flee, but is pulled back and held in Kazuo's clutch with a knife at her throat. Without letting go of her, Kazuo flips a coin; heads being he opposes the game, and tails being he takes part in it. As the coin winds up showing tails, he slices his knife across Izumi's neck and kills her, thus making her Kazuo's first kill during the program.
Etymology[]
- The name Izumi means "fountain, spring" (泉).
- Izumi's surname Kanai means "gold/metal, money/cash, currency" (金) (kana) and "well, mine shaft, pit" (井) (i).
