Battle Royale

Ryoko Anno (安野 良子, Anno Ryōko) is a minor character in the novel and manga versions of Battle Royale. She is not seen or mentioned in the film.

Backstory[]

Ryoko is the caretaker of the Charity House Orphanage where Shuya Nanahara and Yoshitoki Kuninobu were raised.

Novel[]

Kinpatsu Sakamochi states that he informed Ryoko personally that Shuya and Yoshitoki's class had been chosen for the program, and when she protested, he raped her. Kinpatsu's treatment of Ms. Anno infuriates Shuya and Yoshitoki and motivates them both to fight, but when Yoshitoki threatens Kinpatsu, he's executed by government soldiers, after which Kinpatsu states he lied.

Manga[]

Yonemi Kamon informs Ryoko personally that Class-B was selected for the Program, which she and Masao Hayashida protested. Yonemi killed Masao, but it's ambiguous whether or not he raped Ms. Anno like he told Shuya and Yoshitoki. Ms. Anno is seen at the end of the manga, where it's shown that she's in a relationship with a man who brings presents to the orphans on Christmas.

Etymology[]

  • The name Ryoko means "good, virtuous, respectable" (良) (ryo) and "child" (子) (ko).
  • Ryoko's surname Anno means "peace, quiet" (安) (an) and "field, wilderness" (野) (no).
