Saki Sakurai (桜井 咲, Sakurai Saki) is a supporting character in Battle Royale II: Requiem.
Backstory[]
Saki lived with her father and younger brother, Haruya Sakurai. When she was a student her class was forced to take part in Battle Royale. She won it thanks to her natural talent at sniping. After winning, she shot her teacher and ran away and later met Shuya Nanahara while wandering alone.
The novelization of the movie presents a slightly different story for Saki, as well as featuring her as a main character, fully illustrating her victory at Battle Royale. After killing her teacher, she ran away and stayed with another teacher who participated in antigovernmental activities. Through his connections, she also joined the Dawn of Sajia, an activist group, where she met Soji Kazama. However, the teacher was later revealed to be a traitor to the group, and was to be killed; Saki made an attempt to rescue him, and was thus cast out of the organization. As a result, she left the organization, along with Soji, and joined the Dawn of Asia, the activist group led by Shinji Mimura's uncle, then finally joined Shuya's Wild Seven.
ATAT Attacks[]
Saki is reunited with her brother as he is part of a new Battle Royale where they must hunt down Shuya Nanahara and Wild Seven. She however doesn't speak to him most likely as she knows she won't live and doesn't want it to be too painful for herself and brother. Saki realizes that the students are wearing necklaces, and tells Shuya to try and help them as they are being forced to fight. Saki is shot in the chest, and she sets off a computer that will explode and destroy the base, She then fights in the open against many of the ATAT taking many bullets before finally collapsing. Before she dies, Haruya first confronts her, apparently trying to get her to come with. When she ignores him, he tells her he'll never forget her, and he leaves. Saki manages to kill several soldiers before witnessing the death of Maki Souda and being shot herself. She arms a bomb and stands to fire at the soldiers before being gunned down.
Etymology[]
- The name Saki means "blossom" (咲).
- Saki's surname Sakurai means "cherry blossom" (桜) (sakura) and "well, mine shaft, pit" (井) (i).
