Oki is encountered by Shuya Nanahara and Noriko Nakagawa quite early on in the story. He stands on a path on the north mountain a few feet away from where Shuya and Noriko are hiding. When Shuya notices him, he unwittingly touches his designated weapon (a pot lid) and drives Oki to attack them with his designated weapon, a hatchet. Oki just jumps out of a bush as Shuya and Noriko are walking away from an area turning into a danger zone. Shuya and Oki fight while Noriko watched (unable to help Shuya due to a bullet wound in her arm), and in the struggle they fall to the ground and roll down a steep hill. Shuya sits up when they reach a halt, to discover that the hatchet, or in the manga, his machete, has become embedded in the top of the skull. Shuya then starts asking Noriko if it really happened, making her desperately trying to get him to calm down. However, the two no longer had time to debate over Oki's death when they became encountered by Motobuchi, who tried to kill them off just like Oki did to solely survive and win the game.
Although Oki was described as being calm and friendly, he is one of the many students who is driven to extremes by the conditions on the Island. Yuko Sakaki witnesses Oki's death; this later leads to the death of Yukie Utsumi's group in the lighthouse.
