Background[]

Tatsumichi Oki (大木 立道, Ōki Tatsumichi) was described as one of the jocks in the class. He was noted as having a cheerful and kind personality.

Appearance[]

Tatsumichi was described as of being medium height, having solid build, tanned skin and a buzz cut.

Friends and Enemies[]

It is unknown who Tatsumichi was close with, but it can be assumed that he may have been friends with fellow jocks in the class, Tadakatsu Hatagami and Kazushi Niida. After his death, Shogo Kawada says it may be worth assuming that he could have a sick relative at home he has to return to, although this is just a theory.

In the Program[]

Tatsumichi's first appearance is after he runs into Shuya Nanahara and Noriko Nakagawa shortly after the first announcement. He and Shuya stare each other down, but once Shuya raises his hand to the knife in his belt, Tatsumichi rushes towards them. To protect himself and Noriko, Shuya pushes her out of the way and raises his daypack, which Tatsumichi's hatchet hits and splits open. The blade of the hatchet also pierces Shuya's ear.

Shuya then sweeps his leg under Tatsumichi's feet which causes him to fall, and the two fall down a steep slope together. Throughout this, Shuya forcefully holds Tatsumichi's wrists in a way that ensures Shuya won't be hit by his hatchet. Once they land, Shuya tries to escape from under Tatsumichi, when he realizes that Tatsumichi's arms have completely gone limp. He then sees that the hatchet is now buried in Tatsumichi's face. The hatchet landed on his forehead, neatly splitting open the left eyeball while he was still holding onto the hatchet. Shuya removes the hatchet from his face and initially tries to close his eyes. He gives up on this, as one of his eyes is unable to close and he decides that a winking corpse would be distasteful.

There are two witnesses to this scene, one of them is Yuko Sakaki who quickly runs away, assuming that Shuya intentionally killed Tatsumichi. The other is Kyoichi Motobuchi who then aims his gun at him.

Etymology[]

  • The name Tatsumichi means "rise, stand up" (立) (tatsu), and "road, path" (道) (michi)
  • Tatsumichi's surname Oki means "big, great" (大) (ō), and "tree, wood" (木) (ki)
