Yukiko Kitano (北野 雪子, Kitano Yukiko) is a minor character in Battle Royale.
Backstory[]
Nothing is known about Yukiko's life.
Friends and Enemies[]
Yukiko was best friends with Yumiko Kusaka. She had a crush on Shuya Nanahara, but did not want anyone to know except for Yumiko.
Before the Program[]
Before Kitano resigned, Class B decided to take a day off and skip school, Yukiko included; she attended the basketball game against Class A, and celebrated when Class B won. Yukiko decided to go on the class trip; while on the bus, she pored over a catalog with Yumiko. Yukiko fell asleep after breathing in a sleeping gas pumped into the bus; she was then transported to an island and fitted with an explosive collar.
Yukiko, along with the rest of the class, woke up in a classroom in the island's school. Unnerved by the presence of Shogo Kawada and Kazuo Kiriyama, Yukiko rushed over to the window to watch a helicopter land in front of the school. Yukiko was shocked to see that Kitano had returned. When Kitano asked the class if they knew the BR Act law, Yukiko kept quiet, obviously knowing the law, but afraid to say it aloud. Yukiko was horrified upon seeing Masao Hayashida's corpse. When Fumiyo Fujiyoshi was killed, Yukiko panicked and ran for the door trying to escape before running towards the back of the classroom when the soldiers began firing. When Yoshitoki Kuninobu's collar got activated, Yukiko ran around the room trying to evade him.
When Yukiko's name was called, she grabbed her school bag and ran towards the front of the room; she caught her supply bag and ran out of the school.
During the Program[]

Yukiko (right) after being shot by Kazuo.
Yukiko met with Yumiko after leaving the school, and the two made their way up to a high hill where they made an announcement over a megaphone, calling for their classmates to meet them and discuss things as a group. Shogo Kawada fired his shotgun into the air to scare them off, but they stayed where they were and begged whoever was shooting to stop. Shuya yelled at them to run, but rather than move, Yumiko began yelling for Shuya to come to them, before hastily tacking on that Yukiko's had a crush on him for a while, prompting Yukiko to tackle her and call her an idiot. The announcements alerted Kazuo Kiriyama to their location. Kazuo crept up on them and shot both of them with Ryuhei Sasagawa's Uzi. While Yukiko dies after the first round, Yumiko survives only to be tortured by Kazuo who picks up her megaphone and has her whimper into it in pain. Kazuo then kills her by shooting another round of bullets into her stomach. Shuya, who was nearby at the time of the girls' deaths, was distraught at their murders.
When Noriko collapsed and got a fever, she asked (while smiling) Shuya if he loved Yukiko. Shuya claims it's not the right time to discuss that, making Noriko gently defend that she just wants to know out of jealousy.
Etymology[]
- The name Yukiko means "snow" (雪) (yuki) and "child" (子) (ko).
- Yukiko's surname Kitano means "north" (北) (kita) and "field, wilderness" (野) (no).
Notes[]
- Yukiko has the same surname as the teacher Kitano and his daughter, Shiori Kitano but she is not related to either of the two.
